Biophysics Instrumentation Facility (BIF)
Location Information
Street Address:
Biochemistry Building (1985 Section)
433 Babcock Dr. Room B1108
53706 Madison , WI
US
Facilities:

The Biophysics Instrumentation Facility (BIF) serves researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The fourteen state-of-the-art instruments in the BIF have a common purpose: Each enables users to study the conformation, structure, or complexation of biological and other macromolecules. These interrelated properties are the basis for biological and macromolecular function. Each of the instruments provides distinct information, and the ensemble enables thorough characterization of conformation, structure, and complexation.

Support for the establishment of the BIF was provided by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, grant BIR-9512577 from the National Science Foundation, and grant S10 RR13790 from the National Institutes of Health.

Facilities:

The Materials Science Center (MSC) provides instrumentation and expertise for the characterization of materials and nanostructures. It houses four scanning electron microscopes and three transmission electron microscopes, multiple x-ray diffractometers, two surface analysis instruments, and an atomic force microscope. Recent acquisitions include a dual-beam focused ion beam instrument, a scanning confocal micro-Raman spectrometer, and a small-angle x-ray diffractometer. Also new:  A BSL-2 laboratory with a biosafety cabinet is available for sample prep.  A Zeiss 510 confocal microscope and a Bruker Catalyst AFM (bioAFM) are also available in the BSL-2 lab.

The MSC:

  • Provides state-of-the-art instrumentation, support facilities, and expert technical assistance for research and education in materials.
  • Serves the needs of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the state of Wisconsin, and the nation.

Faculty and staff with diverse expertise use the center and are available to help solve materials-related problems.

Facilities:

NIH-funded, shared instrumentation laboratory located in the Biochemistry Department and directed by Professor John Markley. NMRFAM contains nine modern multinuclear NMR spectrometers with field strengths between 400 MHz and 900 MHz equipped for the most demanding multidimensional, multinuclear spectroscopic applications. Cryogenically cooled probes are installed on five of the instruments. Both Bruker and Varian spectrometers are available. Projects focus on structural determinations and development of methods. NMRFAM staff members carry out core research projects and make available to service and collaborative users the techniques and technology developed through these projects.

Newcomb Imaging Center (NIC)
Location Information
Street Address:
Newcomb Imaging Center, Birge Hall
430 Lincoln Drive Room 132
53706 Madison , WI

Facilities:

The Newcomb Imaging Center (NIC) is a center for research and education in the Department of Botany which offers expertise, instruction, and access to instrumentation in modern microscopy to the community of scientists the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Current research in the NIC covers a broad range of biology topics including calcium signaling, protein localization, tropism responses, mechanical signaling, embryo development, hormone signaling, membrane dynamics, bacterial structure, biofilm shape, fungal morphology, neuronal growth, mammary tissue surface, collagen, insect symbionts, and fossil documentation. In addition to biological samples, scientists have used the microscopes in the NIC to observe mineral crystals, nanotubes, silicon surfaces, and synthetic materials.

Along with research, the NIC is a teaching space including introductory demonstrations for The Microscopy of Life (Biomedical Engineering 619), a practical hands-on lab for Advanced Biological Microscopy (Imaging Workshop, Botany 858), and is the site for undergraduate student projects in several other classes (e.g., Botany 300 and Botany 305). Additionally, the NIC hosts outreach events, demos, and a meeting workshop. Typically per year there are over 1000 sign-ups to use our equipment with more than 100 different researchers and students making use of the Center. The NIC is managed and administered by a single 50% staff member (Sarah Swanson).
